Dimitri Shostakovich - Биография композитора на английском.

Dimitri Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on September 25, 1906, to parents, Dmitri Boleslavovich Shostakovich and Sofiya Kokaoulina Shostakovich. He was born to a politically liberal and leftist family. From a very young age, his talent in music was apparent; he was a great pianist as well as a great composer. He began to play the piano at the age of nine, He wrote a funeral march dedicated to two leaders of the Kadet party, and later entered the Petrograd Conservatory.

Upon graduating, he wrote his First Symphony, which was premiered in 1926. The following year, he won an award at the 1927 Warsaw International Piano Competition. He befriended Ivan Sollertinsky, who introduced him to Gustav Mahler’s music, which would later influence Dmitri immensely.

Stalin and the government denunciated him and condemned his opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, as being formalist. His career thereafter was affected greatly, and his income fell to a significant degree. Was broke out between Germany and Russia in 1941, but he continued to compose, even after he and his family were relocated to Kuybishev.

During this time, he wrote his Seventh Symphony, which would represent struggle and triumph against opposition, sentiments he experienced at the time. He was denounced once again in 1948, and he met very dire consequences as a result.His family lost many privileges, and his work was banned. He became the deputy to the Supreme Court in 1951, and upon Stalin’s death in 1953, he wrote his Tenth Symphony.

He joined the Communist Party in 1960, and it is believed that he did so under pressure, for he was not very enthusiastic about his commitment. In 1962, his Thirteenth Symphony was written, which was regarded as anti-Semitic. He suffered from ill health, and was diagnosed with polio. He even broke his legs and suffered from several heart attacks.

On August 9, 1975, he died of lung cancer. Dimitri Shostakovich’s compositions are significant of the Romantic era, and portray elements of atonality and chromaticism. He was very well known for his symphonies and string quartets. He also wrote several operas, concertos, and film music as well.
