Lives: Corcoran State Prison, California
Country: USA

Charles Manson was the leader of a group known as "The Family", in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Manson convinced his young followers of his apocalyptic vision and still has a considerable amount of control over some of the former family members who are still alive. He planned and ordered the family to commit several brutal murders, most notably that of movie actress Sharon Tate who was pregnant at the time. He was convicted of murder in what came to be known as the "Tate-La Bianca case", named after the victims, although he was not accused of committing the murders in person. He is currently serving a life sentence in California's Corcoran State Prison, and is up for parole in 2007; due to his erratic and arguably dangerous behavior, it is highly unlikely he will ever be released.

Since his trial and conviction, Manson's name and image have been integrated into American pop culture generally as a symbol of ultimate evil. Both have been used by many artists (mostly musicians). He was also friends with several notable musicians before the murders were commited, including Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys, and is a marginally successful musician himself whose songs have been covered by many artists.

Anne Bonney & Mary Reade

Anne Bonny and Mary Read are probably the most famous of the female pirates. Their stories started quite separately before they found themselves serving together on the same ship.

Anne Bonny was starting controversy before she was even born. She was conceived as an illegitimate child between successful lawyer (William Cormac) and his maid (Peg Brennan). It was March 8, in the year seventeen hundred. The country was Ireland but that wasn't to last. Her father, unable to deal with the shame he had wrought upon his new family, fled with his maid and daughter to the united states where he amassed a fortune and bought a plantation. This could have been where the story ended but Anne wasn't one to keep quiet.

At the tender age of seventeen she fell madly in love with James Bonny, a seedy and suspicious character who history has accused of marrying Bonny for no other reason then to steal her father's plantation. Her father was not one to be easily fooled and instead of welcoming this unscrupulous character into his family he instead voted on tough love and Anne Bonny was henceforth disowned.

James brought her to the Bahamas where she grew to hate him and his weasel-like ways. It was then that she decided to find a better lot in life. She was used to a life of wealth and wasn't about to settle for falling in love with some poor pauper. Instead she firmly affixed all her attention on Chidley Bayard, the richest man on the island. Legend says she had to dual his current lover to the death for this not-so-noble position in society. As his mistress she traveled everywhere with him, enjoying the excesses life had to offer and learning the moods of the sea.

The affair ended when Bonny met up with Bayard's sister who apparently didn't like her. She was said to have grilled Bonny about her role in Bayard's life and ended the conversation with the sweet note that Bonny was not worth knowing and should keep her distance away from Bayard. Bonny, not one to take this sort of advice instead threw a violent punch knocking out two teeth. Anne was nearly jailed for this but Bayard threw his political weight around to avoid this. Nonetheless the affair was more or less over after this assault.

It wasn't long before Anne had another man lined up in her sights. It was Calico Jack Rackham, a pirate with a lust for danger, treasure, fine living, and fiery women. When Calico Jack decided to leave the Bahamas to go back to his life of pirating Anne refused to wait on the island until his return. SO instead of being the typical wife (or rather mistress) she instead donned men's clothing and boarded Jack's ship as one of the crew members. She had already learned to be deadly efficient with both the pistol and rapier and quickly earned the respect of her oblivious crew members.

Anne loved her life as a pirate and was often one of the first members to set foot on a captured ship. Calico Jack kept her secret until she became pregnant and the swelling of her belly became too obvious to conceal. She was sent back to the island for the rest of her pregnancy. She gave birth to a daughter who shortly after died and spun Anne Bonny into a serious depression. When Jack came back for his mistress he found her a sore sight to behold.

Her husband wasn't exactly thrilled either. Upon Jack's return he conspired to have the lover's interrupted during one of their midnight trysts as proof of adultery. The punishment was death by hanging or a divorce-by-sale, in which Jack had to buy his mistress from her husband. Anne was none too pleased with this idea as she never saw herself to be anyone's property. She stubbornly stuck to her death sentence.

Earlier in the year Anne had saved the governor's life and he wasn't quick to forget this. He told Jack that he was either to talk her into a divorce-by-sale or he was to flog her publicly, return her to her husband, and stop meeting with her. Neither party were about to do this so they instead snuck to the harbor where they stole a vessel and left together for more adventures in pirating.

Enter the scene Mary Read. Mary Read was born sometime in the late seventeenth century in London. Her mother dressed the child as a boy from birth. Some sources say her mother was a widow that merely wanted all the privileges given to a man to be bestowed upon her daughter. Other's claim that Mary was the product of a love affair while Mrs. Read's husband was at sea. In order to cover for her misdeeds she dressed the girl as the legitimate son she had lost while he was away.

At the time money and property could not be inherited by women. However, since the world all thought Mary was a boy, it was she who inherited her father's money when he died. When the money ran out Mary was forced to take on a job, still dressed as a boy. She worked as a footman before escaping to find employment on a Man O'War.

After several years in this job, which she openly despised, she jumped ship and joined the British Military. Here she started as a foot soldier but soon climbed up the ranks to the Horse Regimen. This is where her life as a man starts to wield out of control. She meets a fellow soldier who she falls madly in love with, allowing him to be the first she tells her secret to. The two were promptly wed and Mary started to settle down in a life of domestic complacency running their new inn The Three Horseshoes.

For awhile everything worked fine until she found herself widowed. Tiring of life at the inn she again donned men's clothes and joined the British military. Life a soldier was bittersweet. Memories of her husband made her day sorrowful and she no longer showed any joy in her work. After awhile she jumped on a ship headed for the West Indies. The ship was then captured by Calico Jack and Anne Bonny.

Anne Bonny took one look at Mary Read and decided this new man was good for the taking. The two spent some time together before both of them had to reveal to each other that they were women. After this they became fast friends, keeping each other's secret until Calico Jack grew suspicious of all the time his mistress was spending with this new captive. With his cutlass drawn he interrupted the two, at which point Mary revealed her true identity. Lucky for her Calico Jack decided having two female pirates aboard his ship wasn't a bad idea.

During this time Mary kept herself occupied in a vicious duel with another pirate, far burlier than herself. The two were set ashore and fired off their pistols but both bullets didn't find their target. It was then the two fiercely engaged in a battle of blades with the burly man easily out powering Mary. However this was not the end of Mary. She had more brains than brawn and waited for her opponent to falter in his attack. When he stumbled she immediately took the opportunity to rip open her shirt exposing her bare breasts. In what must have been a moment of shock the man stopped everything and she swung her own blade and killed him with one instantaneous blow.

Soon after Calico Jack finally took the time to propose to Mary and the two were wedded. This new found contentment was not to last. The ship Calico Jack, Anne, and Bonny were on got captured and they were taken prisoner back to Bahamas where all three were sentenced to death by hanging. Mary was just 20 years old.

Calico Jack was hung soon after but Mary and Anne both "pled their bellies" to avoid execution, as both were pregnant. This would only delay eventual justice. Anne died in jail from a fever before the execution could be taken out on her and Mary is stricken from the record at this point. No documents exist stating she was ever executed or released. This has led to a long-lasting mystery about where she may have ended up. Was the record of her hanging lost or ill-recorded or did she find escape somehow? Did her rich father take her back in and bail her out, promising she'd never return? Did the still free pirates threaten to attack the island if she hung? Or did the rumored father of the baby she carried (Dr. Michael Radcliffe) bail her out and move her to the West Indies where she lived out her life in exile? The theories abound and are added to by the year. Unless documents are found revealing the answer we'll probably never know what became of one of the most famous female pirates in the history of the world.
